about

I've been making music as Automatic Shoes since 2006 now... I take my name from the T.Rex song Telegram Sam. "Automatic Shoes, gimme 3D vision & the California Blues". I first found an audience & kinship with T.Rex fans in the UK, so I've covered Marc Bolan pretty regularly over the years - but every few months, I see someone asking if I have an album's worth of covers. The concept has always scared me, as I wanted people to hear my own songs. But as I get older, I realize that fear is a dangerous motivator/inhibitor, and should not be the driving force behind any art. We have enough fear out there in the world - so here is the album where I overcome mine.

Normally before I start recording a new album, I'll warm up by experimenting with a few cover songs, to try out different sound and production ideas. We're just starting in on recording the next Atari Ferrari album, so I wanted to go a little harder this time - 20 songs in one month. Going to California was recorded first and kind of sparked the idea for the whole project. Watching the Wheels was done last, recorded on my iPad. I love the sound of Lennon's demos (and Bolan's.) Also, the lyrics for Dylan's song, Born In Time, were taken from the Oh Mercy sessions demo. I tried to find songs from artists that I think sparked something inside of me as a kid, and those that still inspire me today.

Track Name: There Was A Time
There was a time everything was fine
You got drunk on the day like it was wine
And all the children they put flowers in their hair
And all the grown-ups they put daggers there instead
Track Name: Angel Down
I confess I am lost
In the age of the social
On our knees, take a test
To be lovin' and grateful

Shots were fired on the street
By the church where we used to meet
Angel down, angel down
But the people just stood around

I'm a believer, it's a trial
Foolish and weaker, oh, oh, oh
I'd rather save an angel down
I'm a believer, it's chaos
Where are our leaders? Oh, oh, oh
I'd rather save an angel down

Doesn't everyone belong
In the arms of the sacred?
Why pretend we're all wrong?
Has our young courage faded?

Shots were fired on the street
By the church where we used to meet
Angel down, angel down
Why do people just stand around?

I'm a believer, it's chaos
Where are our leaders? Oh, oh, oh
I'd rather save an angel down
I'm a believer, it's a trial
Foolish and weaker, oh, oh, oh
I'd rather save an angel down
Track Name: Wildflowers
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worry
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free
Track Name: Atari Ferrari - Blitzkrieg Bop
Hey ho, let's go
Hey ho, let's go
Hey ho, let's go
Hey ho, let's go
They're forming in a straight line
They're goin through a tight wind
The kids are losing their minds
Blitzkreig Bop
They're piling in the backseat
They're generation steam heat
Pulsating to the back seat
Blitzkreig Bop
Hey ho, let's go
Shoot em' in the back now
What they want, I don't know
They're all reved up and ready to go
They're forming in a straight line
They're goin through a tight wind
The kids are losing their minds
Blitzkreig Bop
They're piling in the backseat
They're generation steam heat
Pulsating to the back seat
Blitzkreig Bop
Hey ho, let's go
Shoot em' in the back now
What they want, I don't know
They're all reved up and ready to go
They're forming in a straight line
They're goin through a tight wind
The kids are losing their minds
Blitzkreig Bop
They're piling in the backseat
They're generation steam heat
Pulsating to the back seat
Blitzkreig Bop
Hey ho, let's go
Hey ho, let's go
Hey ho, let's go
Hey ho, let's go
Track Name: The Wind
I listen to the wind
To the wind of my soul
Where I'll end up, well, I think
Only God really knows
I've sat upon the setting sun
But never, never, never, never
I never wanted water once
No never, never, never

I listen to my words
But they fall far below
I let my music take me
Where my heart wants to go
I've swam upon the devil's lake
But never, never, never, never
I'll never make the same mistake
No never, never, never
Track Name: The Nothing Maker
He doesn't make shoes
Or design a new shirt
Or take photographs
But no one gets hurts
And he doesn't look trendy
Like guys in magazines
You won't see him at parties
He's not the face behind the scenes

He makes nothing
He's the nothing maker
He's the maker of nothing
He's the nothing maker

And he doesn't paint pictures
Or write poetry
Or act on a stage
For others to see
And he don't expect much
Santa Claus knows
Cause he doesn't make lists
Of toys and new clothes

Everyone's chasing
A reason to live
Mostly they take more than they give
The succeeder justifies
Why he needs more than the rest
He believes his own lies
And thinks he's the best...

But my guy
Doesn't make movies
To suit an audience's whim
He lives by a code
Known only to him
And he doesn't make money
To buy watches and cars
Cause there's no time and no place to go
For a man who has nothing to show
Track Name: Going To California
Spent my days with a woman unkind
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine
Made up my mind to make a new start
Going To California with an aching in my heart

Someone told me there's a girl out there
With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair
Took my chances on a big jet plane
Never let them tell you that they're all the same

The sea was red and the sky was grey
Wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today
The mountains and the canyons started to tremble and shake
As the children of the sun began to awake

Seems that the wrath of the Gods
Got a punch on the nose and it started to flow
I think I might be sinking
Throw me a line if I reach it in time
I'll meet you up there where the path
Runs straight and high

To find a queen without a king
They say she plays guitar and cries and sings
La la la la
Ride a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams
Telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems
Track Name: Coyote
No regrets Coyote
We just come from such different sets of circumstance
I'm up all night in the studios
And you're up early on your ranch
You'll be brushing out a brood mare's tail
While the sun is ascending
And I'll just be getting home with my reel to reel
There's no comprehending
Just how close to the bone and the skin and the eyes
And the lips you can get
And still feel so alone
And still feel related
Like stations in some relay
You're not a hit and run driver, no, no
Racing away
You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway
We saw a farmhouse burning down
In the middle of nowhere
In the middle of the night
And we rolled right past that tragedy
Till we turned into some road house lights
Where a local band was playing
Locals were up kicking and shaking on the floor
And the next thing I know
That Coyote's at my door
He pins me in a corner and he won't take "No!"
He drags me out on the dance floor
And we're dancing close and slow
Now he's got a woman at home
He's got another woman down the hall
He seems to want me anyway
Why'd you have to get so drunk
And lead me on that way
You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines of the freeway
I looked a Coyote right in the face
On the road to Baljennie near my old home town
He went running through the whisker wheat
Chasing some prize down
And a hawk was playing with him
Coyote was jumping straight up and making passes
He had those same eyes - just like yours
Under your dark glasses
Privately probing the public rooms
And peeking through keyholes in numbered doors
Where the players lick their wounds
And take their temporary lovers
And their pills and powders to get them through this passion play
No regrets, Coyote
I just get off up aways
You just picked up a hitcher
A prisoner of the white lines on the freeway
Coyote's in the coffee shop
He's staring a hole in his scrambled eggs
He picks up my scent on his fingers
While he's watching the waitresses' legs
He's too fat from the Bay of Fundy
From Appaloosas and Eagles and tides
And the air conditioned cubicles
And the carbon ribbon rides
Are spelling it out so clear
Either he's going to have to stand and fight
Or take off out of here
I tried to run away myself
To run away and wrestle with my ego
And with this flame
You put here in this Eskimo
In this hitcher
In this prisoner
Of the fine white lines
Of the white lines on the free, free way
Track Name: Born In Time
In the lonely night
In the stardust of a pale moonlight
I think of you in black and white
When we were made of dreams

I walk alone through the shakin' street
Listenin' to my heartbeat
In the record breaking heat
When we were born in time

Just when I thought you were gone
You came back
Just when I was ready to receive ya
You were smooth
You were rough
You were more than enough
Oh babe, why did I ever leave ya
I grieve ya

Out on the risin' curve
Where the waves of nature will test every nerve
I took you close and got what I deserved
When we were born in time

Just when I knew who to thank
You went blank
Oh just when the fire light was gleamin'
You were snow
You were rain
You were striped
You were plain
Oh babe, could it be
That you been schemin'
Or was I dreamin'

In the hills of mystery
In the foggy web of destiny
You're still so deep inside of me
When we were born in time
Track Name: Landslide
I took my love, I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
'Till the landslide brought me down

Oh, mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too

Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too
Oh, I'm getting older too

Oh, take my love, take it down
Oh, climb a mountain and turn around
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down
And if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down, oh oh
The landslide will bring it down
Track Name: In Dreams
A candy-colored clown they call the sandman
Tiptoes to my room every night
Just to sprinkle stardust and to whisper
"Go to sleep. Everything is all right."

I close my eyes, then I drift away
Into the magic night, I softly say
A silent prayer like dreamers do
Then I fall asleep to dreams, my dreams of you

In dreams I walk with you, in dreams I talk to you
In dreams you're mine, all of the time
We're together in dreams, in dreams
But just before the dawn, I awake and find you gone

I can't help it, I can't help it, if I cry
I remember that you said goodbye

It's too bad that all these things
Can only happen in my dreams
Only in dreams, in beautiful dreams
Track Name: Watching The Wheels
People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin
When I say that I'm o.k. they look at me kind of strange
Surely you're not happy now you no longer play the game

People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away
Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me
When I tell that I'm doing Fine watching shadows on the wall
Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball?

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go

People asking questions lost in confusion
Well I tell them there's no problem
Only solutions
Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind
I tell them there's no hurry...
I'm just sitting here doing time

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round
I really love to watch them roll
No longer riding on the merry-go-round
I just had to let it go
Track Name: Helplessly Hoping
Helplessly hoping her harlequin hovers nearby
Awaiting a word
Gasping at glimpses of gentle true spirit he runs
Wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of goodbye

Wordlessly watching he waits by the window and wonders
At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams he worries
Did he hear a good-bye?
Or even hello?

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other

Stand by the stairway you'll see something certain to tell you
Confusion has its cost
Love isn't lying it's loose in a lady who lingers
Saying she is lost
And choking on hello

They are one person
They are two alone
They are three together
They are for each other
Track Name: After The Gold Rush
Well I dreamed I saw the knights in armor comin'
Sayin' something about a queen
There were peasants singin' and drummers drummin'
And the archer split the tree
There was a fanfare blowin' to the sun
That was floating on the breeze
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the 1970s
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the 1970s

Lyin' in a burned out basement
With the full moon in my eyes
I was hopin' for replacement
When the sun burst though the sky
There was a band playin' in my head
And I felt like getting high
I was thinkin' about what a friend had said
I was hopin' it was a lie
Thinkin' about what a friend had said
I was hopin' it was a lie

Well, I dreamed I saw the silver space ships flyin'
In the yellow haze of the sun
There were children cryin' and colors flyin'
All around the chosen ones
All in a dream, all in a dream
The loadin' had begun
Flying Mother Nature's silver seed
To a new home in the sun
Flying Mother Nature's silver seed
To a new home
Track Name: Moving In Stereo
Life's the same I'm moving in stereo
Life's the same except for my shoes
Life's the same you're shakin' like tremolo
Life's the same it's all inside you

It's so easy to blow up your problems
It's so easy to play up your breakdown
It's so easy to fly through the window
It's so easy to fool with the sound

It's so tough to get up
It's so tough
It's so tough to live up
It's so tough on you

Life's the same I'm moving in stereo
Life's the same except for my shoes
Life's the same you're shakin' like tremolo
Life's the same it's all inside you

Life's the same I'm moving in stereo
Life's the same except for my shoes
Life's the same you're shakin' like tremolo
Life's the same it's all inside you
Track Name: Atari Ferrari - Ziggy Stardust
Ziggy played guitar,
jamming good with Wierd and Gilly,
And The Spiders from Mars.
He played it left hand,
but made it too far,
Became the special man,
Then we were Ziggy's Band.

Ziggy really sang,
screwed-up eyes and screwed-down hairdo
Like some cat from Japan,
he could lick 'em by smiling
He could leave 'em to hang
He came on so loaded man,
well-hung and snow white tan.

So where were the spiders
while the fly tried to break our balls?
Just the beer light to guide us.
So we bitched about his fans
and should we crush his sweet hands?

Ziggy played for time,
jiving us that we were Voodoo
The kids were just crass,
He was the naz
With God given ass
He took it all too far
But, boy, could he play guitar.

Making love with his ego,
Ziggy sucked up into his mind
Like a leper messiah
When the kids had killed the man
I had to break up the band

Ziggy played guitar
Track Name: Spaceball Ricochet
I'm just a man
I understand the wind
And all the things
That make the children cry
With my Les Paul
I know I'm small
But I enjoy living
Anyway

Book after book
I get hooked
Every time the writer
Talks to me like a friend
What can I do
We just live in a zoo
All I do is play
The spaceball ricochet

Deep in my heart
There's a house
That can hold
Just about all of you
I bought a car
It was old but kind
I gave it my mind
And it disappeared

I love a girl
She is a changeless angel
She's a city it's a pity
That I'm like me
I said how can I lay
When all I do is play
The spaceball ricochet
Track Name: When The World Was Round
Remember the kids in the playground avoiding the bullies each day
Timing your life to the monsters, the monsters that won't go away
And you win some, you lose some, you ain't got much choice
So you choose one, what have you done ?

Everybody lies and we're stuck in the middle
I think I liked it better when the world was round
There's too much information but not enough to go on
I think I liked it better when the world was round

Now that we're older and wiser, now we got kids of our own
Timing their lives to the monsters but the monsters won't leave them alone
You win some, you lose some, you ain't got much choice
But it's gotta be done, yeah, it's gotta be done

'Cause everybody lies and we're stuck in the middle
I think I liked it better when the world was round
There's too much information but not enough to go on
I think I liked it better when the world was round;

I don't wanna put you off it, I don't wanna put you off it
But I think I liked it better when the world was round
And I wish that I could change it, yes I wish that I could change it
I think I liked it better when the world was round

Is it my imagination ?
When I look back through the ages ?
Is it my imagination ? Yeah

You win some, you lose some, you only got two shots
So you take one, what have you done ?

'Cause everybody lies and we're stuck in the middle
I think I liked it better when the world was round
There's too much information but not enough to go on
I think I liked it better when the world was round
And I don't think we deserve this, no I don't think we deserve this
I think I liked it better when the world was round
Give me a reason to believe in, give me a reason to believe in
I think I liked it better when the world was round
Maybe we can make it better, maybe we can make it better
I think I liked it better when the world was round
When the world was round, when the world was round
I think I liked it better when the world was round
When the world was round, when the world was round
Track Name: Jaguars In The Air
I know, I know, I know, I know
When I go, I go, I go, I go
I know, I know, I know, I know
When I go, I go, I go, I go

Gonna get somewhere, gonna get somewhere
Gonna find my way out, gonna find my way out
Gonna get somewhere, gonna get somewhere
Gonna find my way out, gonna find my way out

(Ahh, ah-ahh)

Jaguars in the air, jaguars in the air, air
Jaguars in the air
(You and me, we shine together)
Jaguars in the air, jaguars in the air, air
Jaguars in the air
(If you dream it, you can have it)

On an island, we ride the wave
It's so blue, I can't look away
Vacation forever, baby
I know we gon' make it someday

Gonna get somewhere, gonna get somewhere
Gonna find my way out, gonna find my way out
Gonna get somewhere, gonna get somewhere
Gonna find my way out, gonna find my way out

Jaguars in the air
(You and me, we shine together)
Jaguars in the air, jaguars in the air, air
Jaguars in the air
(If you dream it, you can have it)

And you know that I've been dreaming for a long time
(And if you dream it, you can have it)
So baby, let's get ready for a long ride, yeah

Don't wanna wait, don't wanna wait, don't wanna wait, nah
Don't wanna wait, don't wanna wait, don't wanna wait, nah
Don't wanna wait, don't wanna wait, don't wanna wait, nah
Don't wanna wait, don't wanna wait, don't wanna wait, nah

(Ah-ahh)

Jaguars in the air
(If you dream it, you can have it)
Jaguars in the air, jaguars in the air, air
Jaguars in the air
(You and me, we shine together)
Jaguars in the air, jaguars in the air, air
Jaguars in the air
(If you dream it, you can have it)
